For what conditions can my physician write a written certification? (Click to Open)

A chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition that results in a patient being admitted into hospice or receiving palliative care; or

A chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition or the treatment of a chronic or debilitating disease or medical condition that produces:

  1. Cachexia, anorexia, or wasting syndrome;
  2. Severe or chronic pain;
  3. Severe nausea;
  4. Seizures; or
  5. Severe or persistent muscle spasms.

The Commission may approve applications that include any other condition that is severe and for which other medical treatments have been ineffective if the symptoms reasonably can be expected to be relieved by the medical use of cannabis.

What is the process for obtaining legal medical cannabis in the State of Maryland?

Step 1

Submit Application

Be sure to have a valid, accessible email address to use

Complete and submit the online registration form on the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission website.

Be sure to review the process to register and what you’ll need when registering as:

The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission will review your application. If approved, you will be registered with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission.

However, you must still obtain a valid written certification from your physician to purchase medical cannabis.

Once approved, your registration is valid for two years

Step 2

Obtain Certification

Once registered, patients will need a valid written certification from a physician registered with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission in order to purchase medical cannabis.

When both the patient and physician are registered under the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, physicians will need the Patient ID Number of patient in order to issue certification for medical cannabis

Step 3

Visit Maryland Dispensary

After your registration has been approved and you have received a valid written certification by your physician, you may visit a licensed Maryland dispensary once they are available in the state

When visiting a licensed dispensary, you are able to purchase medical cannabis

Step 4

Retrieving ID Card

Patients are able to purchase optional ID cards

Card fee: $50

ID cards cannot be purchased until valid written certification from a physician has been received by Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission
